Mahenge Garnet

Looking for something new? Mahenge garnets are not your grandmother’s garnet. Instead, they are a beautiful new discovery of garnet, found in 2015. A mixture of pyrope, almandine, and spessartine, most of these garnets come in a range of colors from pink to purple, with some displaying a color-shift from pink/red to purple depending on the light source. They are generally very clean with lots of scintillation due to their high dispersion. Several articles have been written about these spectacular garnets. Unfortunately, the original deposit of these garnets seems to be played out, and prices are increasing. Current retail pricing for rough, uncut material is currently $25-70 per carat, and the market price for clean, bright, genuine Mahenge garnets is currently several hundred dollars per carat for stones over a carat in weight.

We were fortunate enough to have purchased a couple parcels of rough gemstones soon after Mahenge garnets were first discovered. We had the smaller parcel faceted soon after we acquired it, but the other parcel has been sitting in our vault until recently, when we sent it to our cutting shop and were amazed with the results.
