Spinel

Spinels share a history with rubies and sapphires.  In fact, spinels were considered to be rubies and sapphires until less than 250 years ago.  The 170 carat Black Prince Ruby, one of the most famous stones in the Imperial Crown of England, is actually a red spinel.
