Known as the Dawn Redwood, this tree is part of the Sequoia subfamily. Formerly found in the Northern hemisphere, the Dawn Redwood is currently found in China, although it has been planted throughout the world since its discovery in 1939. It is distinct from the Sequoia and Redwood trees found in California and Oregon in that it sheds its leaves every winter while the Redwood and Sequoia trees keep their foliage year-round.
The Metasequoia fossils we are offering are from the Tranquille Shale formation, near Cache Creek, British Columbia. This formation was deposited during the Middle Eocene, approximately 40-45 million years ago, when the Dawn Redwood was plentiful in North America. Each fossil is unique, and some may show signs of repair, although every fossil we offer is authentic. Please take your time to view what we have to offer. We have a large supply, and will be adding additional fossils to our website as we process our inventory. Here is your opportunity to own a window into the Earth’s past. .
